In 1906 the American army pulls out of Manila leaving a handful of officers to try and get the Philippines Constabulary into shape to protect the native population from ruthless invaders. By reputation and by their exploits the fearless zealots initially strike terror into the local militia but the doctor on the post starts to finds ways to combat this. The American army men are in Mindanao (not Manila), the second largest island in the Philippines and in t! he south-east. They are training the Filipinos to protect the native population from ruthless Moslem suicide bombers. Mindanao had and still does have a large active Moslem activists, who where still bombing in the 1970's. The countryside is desolate and they only people they meet is at a police road block but they get little information and are soon on their way. They get to the beach safely but in a strange turn of events, Doug finds himself trapped when part of the pier collapses and he is unable to free his foot. With the tide coming in, Helen sets off to find some help and thinks she's found it when she runs into an American, Lawson. Twenty-something Berry-Berry Willart has left his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio primarily to get away from his overbearing mother and alcoholic! father, Annabell and Ralph Willart, as Berry-Berry doesn't like the way they treat him as the prodigal son. Berry-Berry has always taken the easy way out, and will often use his good looks to take advantage of women, who are initially more than willing to help out this good looking young man until they really get to know him. But his parents, especially Annabell, believe he can do no wrong. And his bright sixteen year old brother, Clinton Willart, idolizes him. Although Berry-Berry originally had no intention of ever returning to Cleveland which Ralph realizes but Annabell refuses to acknowledge in her heart, he decides to head back to Cleveland but initially not tell his family. Berry-Berry's trip home coincides with a visit the Willarts receive from a family friend, thirty-one year old Echo O'Brien. It's love at first sight between Berry-Berry and Echo. Although Clinton, who loves Echo himself with Echo in turn loving him like her best kid brother, gives Berry-Berry his ! blessing with Echo, Clinton, deep in his heart, is afraid that!
