Raj is a rich, carefree, happy-go-lucky second generation NRI. Simran is the daughter of Chaudhary Baldev Singh, who in spite of being an NRI is very strict about adherence to Indian values. The two meet on a month long Eurotrip, and what began as pranks and fun and games, ends in love. But by the time they realize it, it is already too late, as Simran has left for India to be married to her childhood fianc! �. Raj and Simran, played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, are young Indians living in the United Kingdom. Raj is the only son of a rich Indian played by Anupam Kher and Simran is the elder daughter of Amrish Puri. Simran meets Raj on a trip to European countries which she got permission to go after a lot of pleads to her strict dad.After some initial misadventures, they fall in love. Simran goes home and tells her family about her romance. Her father, will have nothing to do with a love marriage, and is adamant that she marry his best friend's son Kuljeet, who is a man full of himself and thinks he is a shikari (Hunter), to whom she has been promised since she was born. Her mother wants to spare Simran, but cannot sway the domineering father. Even though Simran doesn't agree to the marriage her fa! mily returns to Punjab as they prepare for the wedding. Raj, h! owever, does not give up so easily. He follows Simran to Punjab, meet her privately and assures her that he will save her from the arranged marriage. However, he refuses to elope with Simran because he wants everyone happy with the marriage. He wants to marry her with the consent of her father. Raj befriends the soon-to-be groom and pretends to be a friend of the family. He helps with the wedding preparations and soon gains everyone's friendship and love. At the same time Kuljeet's sister falls in love with Raj and it gets more complicated when Raj's dad suddenly appears in the family and says yes to the marriage. By now, Even Simran's father is won over. However everything comes crashing down when Raj's true identity is revealed, when Simran's father sees a photograph of Raj and Simran. Then, as Raj is preparing to leave when Kuljeet comes and beats him up for playing games with him. Wealthy widower Dharamvir Malhotra is settled in London, U.K. with his only son, Raj who is spoiled to say the least, attends party and drinks beer as part of his recreational activities. One day his pranks get him into trouble when he steals beer from a shop-keeper but manage to handle his situation. Raj finds out there address, create a devious plan with Simran's help and is all set to win Baldev's heart and asks for his daughter's hand in marriage but before this could happen Kuljeet's sister, Preeti falls in love with Raj and the family has had there marriage set. Chowdary Baldev Singh is settled in London with his wife Lajjo and two daughters, Simran and Chutki. Despite living abroad for more than 20 years, he still strongly believes in Indian traditions, so he arranges Simran's marriage with his friend's son Kuljeet in Punjab, India. Raj, the loafing, care-free son of an NRI, Dharamveer Malhotra, and Simran accidentally meet and fall in love while traveling with their friends through Europe. When Baldev Singh finds ! out that Simran is in love, he decides to pack and leave for India. Madly in love, Raj comes to India in search of her. His plans to impress Baldev Singh fail. Simran wants to elope but is stopped. The rest of movie is about how Raj is successful in taking his bride by working his way into Kuljeet's family to get to Simran. The film has elements of the hit film 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun...!' particularly in the scenes of the engagement. A touching family drama with good and catchy music numbers from Jatin-Lalit, the film includes the songs "Tuje dekha to yeh jana sanam," "Mehndi laga ke rakhna," "Doli sajake rakhna," and the title song. Raj is the only son of wealthy and London-based Dharamvir Malhotra, is given complete freedom to indulge himself, and does so with women and beer, which lands him in hot soup now and then. He meets with Simran, and after a few misunderstandings, both are attract! ed to each other. Simran's father, Chaudhry Baldev Singh, woul! d like S imran to re-locate to India and marry the son of his childhood buddy, Ajit Singh, to which she reluctantly agrees. When Raj finds out that Simran has left London, he too leaves, and ends up in her village. He meets her and together they concoct a scheme in which he will befriend Kuljeet and be invited as a guest to his forthcoming wedding, which succeeds. The problem is that Baldev recognizes Raj, who had purchased beer in his London store and mocked him, and to make matters worse, Kuljeet's attractive sister, Preeti, has fallen head-over-heels in love with Raj and wants to marry him.
